Using the ubuntu software repository, try uninstalling it and reinstalling it.

Thanks you. I did this as you suggest, shutting down the computer after uninstall and installing skype again on reboot.

The situation remains the same. I open the application and am typing in the password, and the window disappears, the reappears. This may happen twice and each time I cannot finish the password. The the skype window remains disappeared.

Hi John,

Ok, that's the limit of my knowledge :) ...you may like to enter this as a bug report perhaps?

Thanks
Paul

How did you install skype? What version are you running? If you installed it using the Partner repository or with a manually downloaded .deb file, what package version are you running? (One way to find this out is to open up a Terminal window, which you can do by pressing Ctrl+Alt+T, and run the command "apt-cache policy skype" without the quotes.)

Also, please try running Skype from a Terminal window (just type "skype" without the quotes and press enter). The same problem will probably occur again, but there may be useful messages written to the Terminal. You can then select all the text in the Terminal (Edit > Select All), copy it to the clipboard (Edit > Copy), and paste it here.

just prior to your helpful comments, I went to the Home, and opened up the .skype file and deleted from it the shared.xml file. That resolved the problem.

Thanks to all who responded.
