Cannot use mic with Skype on 10.10 netbook remix

Asked by gratefulfrog

I can record with the sound recorder.
I have set the right channel of the mic to zero with gnome alsa mixer and pusle audoi sound control.
It seems like tons of people have this problem but there doesn't seem to be a solution forthcoming.

I am running this on an Asus EEEpc 1201N.

Thanks,
Bob

Hello,

You have to set the sound settings for Skype in Skype.

Regards,

Allan :)

Thanks for that remark, Allan, but I've been round the question in great depth. There seems to be no way of getting it to work.

I have fully explored the sound settings in Skype.

By the way, the sound recorder works fine on the Asus, even though no sound can get into Skype.

Further, Skype works fine on my big Linux PC, but not on my Asus 1201n.

I'm surprised that there is not a definitive answer from the Ubuntu team, considering the massive amount of people who report this problem.

Ciao,
Bob.

Hello,

What version of Ubuntu are you using?

I am running 10.10 on an emachine and the internal mike works with Skype. I use an external mike for Skype on a Asus Netbook with 10.10 and it works perfectly.

Regards,

Allan :)

Hi Frog,

First install audacity to confirm your mic is working at all. You should be able to record yourself and play it back.

Then, if this works, sometimes Skype needs some handholding to select the appropriate input device.

The troubleshooting guide about microphone input selection (pavucontrol) may be relevant here.

Although I could fix this problem on skype by means of the pulse audio control, it is not fixable that way with gmail voice chat...

All this is really sad considering it worked fine in 10.4 ...

Thanks to all for their attempts.
Ciao,
Bob

Ok, I gave up on pulseaudio - really would anyone want that?

I went back to esound and everything works perfectly with no fiddling:
- skype set to default audio,
- skype set to manage the mic level automatically !
- gmail chat works fine, including video!

Really, it was a mistake to move to pusleaudio. The platform is not mature in my opinion.
Thanks to all who helped!
Ciao,
Bob
