Asked by Bob

Looked at some of the answers to this question. did a top in the terminal at the top it is saying 91% si pw under the COMMAND line. whats is this? whats dose it do? can I turn this off? and if so how do I . sometime when I turn off the computer it will say unknown program still running. don't think that is a good sine ether.

Under %CPU, top should show what process or processes is/are responsible for this. Can you copy the relevant lines and paste them here?

Please run "ps axfww" and post the output here. (There will probably be plenty of it, but you need only use http://paste.ubuntu.com if it's more than several hundred lines.)

Also: If you currently have any documents open with confidential or otherwise sensitive names (for example, if you're a doctor and you have a patient file open whose filename contains the patient's name), you should look through the output of that command before posting it--it might contain confidential information. Since you're using the oem user, I'm guessing you're customizing an OEM system, so I doubt that's the case, but it's better to be warned than sorry. ;-)

For some reason, there had originally been a formatting problem with the output of top, so that what should have said "sipw" said "si pw".

Since it's sipw, that's SIP Witch (see http://www.gnu.org/software/sipwitch/ and http://packages.ubuntu.com/natty/sipwitch) causing the problem. This is a known issue. Following the instructions in post #8 at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1599733 (and then rebooting) should fix the problem. However, that's not a good solution, if you need SIP Witch. If you don't know if you need it, you probably don't, and you can go ahead and disable it (you can always re-enable it later).

will go through everything you sent me tomorrow getting late. But if it dose not work how do I disable it? thank you. and yes I was down loading song the other day.

The instructions I sent you are for disabling it.

In case you're asking how to re-enable it: Just reverse the change (when you take a look at the forum post, you'll probably find that the change is simple).

If you have any trouble implementing that solution or you find that you end up needing SIP Witch after all, please post a reply. Otherwise, you can mark this question as Solved.
