simplescan does not take a4 as default setting

Even after setting page size to a4 in edit-preferences, simple scan has started saving the scanned image as letter or legal and shows a black portion on top of page. Am using ubuntu 16.04 with simplescan 3.20.0 with hp m1136 all in one laser printer cum scanner

After tweaking the brightness, contrast and resolution for text as 200dpi or 300dpi and resolution for photo as 300dpi, simplescan reverted to its previous error free state and now accepts the a4 size setting. The brightness was increased to more than 50 percent and the contrast too. The setting is set to front (and not back or front and back) and so on. In the absence of a proper configuration file for simplescan, the user has no way to set the hardcoded settings even thru the GUI

The problem was solved by tweaking the settings in the GUI of simplescan after much trial and error
