"No scanners detected" for HP 8600 on 12.04.

Asked by Private User on 2013-05-21

"No scanners detected" for HP 8600 on 12.04.
But simple scan worked fine with 11.10.
(This is a complete new install of 12.04 on a different partition on the same machine.)
 And hplib is installed.
Printing to the HP 8600 works fine.

Have you tried xsane?

I also installed xsane and it could not find the scanner (hp 8600) either. xsane has worked fine for me on earlier versions of ubuntu (although I had not before used it with the hp 8600).

I just hooked up an old Cannon "CanoScan N 650U" USB connected scanner and it worked right away with Simple-Scan. It also worked with xsane.

What is the output of:

lsb_release -a; uname -a; lsusb

Thanks

~$ lsb_release -a

Note that the hp 8600 is on the network, and not connected via USB.
Also tcpdump shows that Simple-Scan does not talk on the network at all before it declares "No scanners detected".

Is it a USB scanner?
Was it connected and powered on when you ran lsusb?

Thanks

After running hp-setup as suggested in the ScanningHowTo, Simple-Scan worked. Thanks

Thanks actionparsnip, that solved my question.

Why didn't you try that page first.......
