10.04 does not recognize Brother MFC-J280W as a scanner.

When attempting to scan via Simple Scan app shows error message; 'FAILED TO SCAN unable to connect to scanner' and offers option to change scanners (no other available) or close. Device is connected via USB 2.0. Printer function is recognized and provisioned.

Lucid desktop has less than a few weeks support left. I recommend you upgrade sooner rather than later.
Did you grab the driver deb from their website (if it exists). Brother Linux support is pretty decent.
