I assume the printer, prints but does not scan. I have had good luck with Simple Scan and Xsane Image Scanning Program. There are other programs in Ubuntu Software Center. Just write "scanner" in search box.

Can you give the output of:

lsb_release -a; uname -a; lsusb

Have you tried in a Precise liveCD to test. Lucid is quite old (but is still supported). Worth a try
