Brother DCP-145C. Can't persuade scanner to work in 11.10

Says it all in the first line really. There is a slight hint on BrotherSolutions of how to get it to work on 64 bit Beta 2, but I'm using 32 bit. ActionParsnip and others have given me useful advice in the past when I was using earlier distributions. Any ideas, please? Thanks in anticipation.
