Driver for Canon N640P Scanner

Asked by Mike Green

On the website sane_canon-pp-Linux it states:

The sane-canon_pp library implements a SANE (Scanner Access Now Easy) backend that provides access to the following Canon flatbed scanners: and includes CanoScan N640P ex .

But I cannot find out how to download the driver. If the information is there it is over my head as my computer skills are very limited.

Have you tried plugging the scanner in, and running "simple-scan" or "xsane"? If sane supports it, it should be installed without the need to manually download anything.

If you still cannot access your scanner post back, and we can request you to obtain some information from your system and use this to troubleshoot the problem further

Dear Mycae,

Yes, I tried both but the N640P ex scanner connects to the parrallel
port and is not detected.

The sane_canon-pp-Linux website refers only to parrallel port scanners
which is what got my hopes up for a solution. I followed all the links
but was unable to find the driver to download.

Thanks for your input, if you can help further it would be much
appreciated.

regards

Mike

Maybe you should take this to the sane-devel mailing list at http://www.sane-project.org/mailing-lists.html -- that is where the real experts concerning sane are. In general searching for https://www.google.com/search?client=ubuntu&channel=fs&q=canon+scanner+linux&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8 does not look very good.

Dear Michael,

Thank you for the advice. The SANE homepage took me to a list of
supported scanners which included the Canon N640P ex but I was still
unable to find out how to access the driver. Following your advice I
tried to access the Help Mailing List (Sane IRC channel) and received a
Chromium Protocol request which I accepted but nothing happened! I tried
several times.
It is most frustrating now knowing that a driver exists but I can't use
it!

regards

Mike Green

Working fine (installing, scanner and parallel port access)

open Terminal

1)
sudo apt-get install libsane libsane-extras libsane-extras sane sane-utils xsane xsane-common libieee1284-3

2)
sudo gedit / etc / sane.d / dll.conf '

In this file, we look for our scanner line (in this case canon_pp) and uncomment (remove the # sign in front).
Save and close the file.

3)
sudo gedit / etc / sane.d / canon_pp.conf '

In this file, uncomment the line force_nibble and the line FB630P (11001100 style .. Also works for FB330P, N340P, N640P). Save and close the file

4)
close terminal

5)
Unplugged the scanner, plug it again ... launch Applications / Graphics / XSane Image Scanner ... and our scanner should be detected ...

I very much appreciate your efforts but I cannot access to the file in
line 2 (sudo gedit ...), I have tried various changes for example
leaving out the space before the /; sometimes I am told that it cannot
find the file and others the no entry sign with / is a directory.

Hope you can be of help.

Please type without space between / and without ' at the end.

step 2)
sudo gedit /etc/sane.d/dll.conf

step 3)
sudo gedit /etc/sane.d/canon_pp.conf

In my case working fine (sorry for the bad copy/paste). Let me say if it's ok.

I am nearly there! I get as far as your heading 5 and I am told "no
devices available".

The "help" bar suggests 6 possible causes, I thought that clause 6 might
be the most likely that more than one version of sane is installed. I
did a search for canon_pp. and found the 5 files set out below. May
there be a duplication?

a) Note that in my case device available only in administrator account, I didn't look for a solution for other account because they don't use scanner.

b) In other accounts "no device available".

c) Other thing, the first time "simple scan" not work but xsane yes. May be xsane can configure this and simple scan not.

d) Be sure that you scanner is plugged, when you do it, you listen electric motor and see green light if open.

e) The Spanish article where I found this information refer to http://www.sane-project.org/man/sane-canon_pp.5.html may be more help here.

I hope is useful for you.

Dear Stéphane,

I am still struggling.

At first I thought that the software had been loaded and that my
difficulty was in accessing it.

I have followed up on your hints.

In the terminal history there appears to be no record of any
installation! Should I have saved entry 1/ or should I have just entered
or nothing before moving on to 2/?

I am sure you find my lack of computer skills frustrating and I am
indebted to you for your patience.

Regards

Mike

Hi Mike,

unfortunately I am not knowledgeable about the driver myself. This launchpad discussion failed to attract the right people. I know for sure that you can reach knowledgeable people by writing an email to <email address hidden>. Of course I cannot guarantee that they will helpful towards you and your precise problem, but it is your best guess.
