Purchased HP 6500A Plus printer scanner. Scanner will not work with my ubuntu system.

you have to use the program called simple scan for scanning. if you like a bit more features than what simple scan offers, you can install xsane. it's available in the software center.

Also had this problem fixed it by installing the latest version of hplip.
