How to use a network MFP as a linux scanner? And as a fax?

Asked by Uqbar

I have a multifunction printer which is capable to work as a scanner and as a fax.
It works fine as a printer and as a scanner when connected via USB.
How can I use it as a scanner when connected with ethernet?
And what about using it as a fax?

The scanner has its own ethernet port with its own IP address.
And it works as a network printer.
But I don't know how to use it as a network scanner, just like it can be done under Windows.
