the program Simple scan 1.0.3 cannot find my mfc-240c scanner. How can I solve this in an easy way?

Which ubuntu version are you using?

You need to install the brother scanner drivers, by hand, as brother do not provide a free driver, and the device has not been reverse engineered :

If the driver install succeeds, but the scanner still does not function, you may need to continue from step 5, posted here (this depends upon your ubuntu version).

Ah, the full answer to my second comment is indeed covered in the brother instructions. Just follow those -- you can ignore my second link.
