Unable to use scanner on Ubuntu 11.10

Asked by William Pabon

I have a Genius Color Page Vivid 1200 scanner that works fine on my machine with Ubuntu 10.04, but when I try to use it with Ubuntu 10.10 or 11.10 I get the following message with the simple scan app.:

'Unable to connect to scanner'

I get a similar message if I try to use XSane program. This is the lsusb result with 11.10

Additional info.
While the machine was on, I disconnected the scanner, and connected it again, and now it doesn't show up on the list of hw connected to the usb port, as the following list shows.

williepabon@WorkStation-670:~$ lsusb
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 0930:6545 Toshiba Corp. Kingston DataTraveler 102 Flash Drive / HEMA Flash Drive 2 GB / PNY Attache 4GB Stick
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 046d:0990 Logitech, Inc. QuickCam Pro 9000
Bus 003 Device 002: ID 413c:1003 Dell Computer Corp. Keyboard Hub
Bus 003 Device 003: ID 413c:2010 Dell Computer Corp. Keyboard
williepabon@WorkStation-670:~$

I turned the machine off and on again to see if the hw detection process will detect the scanner, but it didn't.
