Install scanner epson perfection 4180

Asked by REaton

I have tried to get to scanning with ubuntu... Almost a total noob at linux ubuntu.
I found a link to a linux driver for my specific scanner. "Epson Perfection 4180"

 http://www.avasys.jp/lx-bin2/linux_e/scan/DL2.do

It's pretty confusing all the rhetoric about "free:unfree" "tar. xsane :insane...
can someone deobfuscate this issue or point to

1) a logical sequence to determine if this scanner and driver will work with Natty.
2) a procedure to make the scanner work, if it will work on Ubuntu.

I was really impressed with the progress Ubuntu has made in the last two years on driver support. I tried Natty and it only took a few minutes to get my network laser printer going...
and the speed of natty leaves windows eating dust...
Please help...
and thanks

Should be ok, you may need to install alien to translate the rpms to deb

Say - I tried this too and I get the following (below). Very non-straightforward process to say the least. Any help would be appreciated!

sudo alien -i iscan-2.10.0-1.c2.i386.rpm
Warning: Skipping conversion of scripts in package iscan: postinst postrm preinst prerm
Warning: Use the --scripts parameter to include the scripts.
mkdir: cannot create directory `iscan-2.10.0': File exists
unable to mkdir iscan-2.10.0: at /usr/share/perl5/Alien/Package.pm line 257.

this might work: http://community.linuxmint.com/hardware/view/1450

alternatively, indicated here: http://ubuntu.flowconsult.at/en/epson-3170-installation/9.04/ you can add some flags to alien/dpkg, but that could mess up your system, if it does not work flawlessly with recent version of Ubuntu

mkdir: cannot create directory `iscan-2.10.0': File exists
unable to mkdir iscan-2.10.0: at /usr/share/perl5/Alien/Package.pm line 257.
