simple scan produces damaged pdf files

Asked by Gordon McMillen on 2011-08-09

I am running Ubuntu Maverick 10.10 on an Acer aspire one intel Atom netbook and have a problem with Simple scan, version 2.32.0.

When I scan a document to a PDF, from an epson DX6050, the resulting PDF cannot be opened, either by Document Viewer (evince) version 2.32.0 or in Adobe reader X version 10.0.1 on a Windows network PC.

In Evince the error is "Unable to open document. PDF document is damaged"
I noted in another posting a recommendation was to use the terminal to gain extra information. On running evince in a terminal window to open the same file the errors are as follows:-
Error: PDF file is damaged - attempting to reconstruct xref table...
Error: Couldn't find trailer directory
Error: Couldn't read xref table
Error: PDF file is damaged - attempting to reconstruct xref table...
Error: Couldn't find trailer directory
Error: Couldn't read xref table

In Adobe Reader X the error is "There was an error opening the document. The file is damaged and could not be repaired"

Simple scan works find when scanning a photo, producing a JPG image

Any help would be appreciated
Thanks
Gordon

Have you tried scanning in a different application?

I downloaded gscan2pdf and this successfully created a pdf that can be opened without any error.

Many thanks, hadn't thought to go looking for another program.

Mark as solved??? How does "use a different app" count as solving the problem? Isn't the idea to fix whatever is wrong with simple-scan?
