adf line or page creep

When using HP's 5590 scanner the adf (Automatic Document Feeder) option produces page or line creep per page. A simple scan ( one page on the screen) does work well but multiple pages (via the ADF) have pronounced creep as you go from page to page. I have checked this symptom against both Ubuntu 10.04 and Red Hat 14; both have the exact same problem with Simple Scan. I have selected both auto page length and letter page length; not a solution. I have adjusted the margins; no solution. I have used multiple legal size documents; the creep is still present.
