My simple scanner is giving me large MB scans

I reinstalled my Ubuntu o/s and installed the simple scan app. I tried several scans of book pages and all of them give me pictures 2MB or more. My question is how can I reduce the dpi which I assume will also lower the size of the picture? I don't know how to change the dpi size on simple scan. Where do I go on a step by step way?

you might want to install xsane and use that instead of simple scan. it offer more options than simple scan does and you can set your scanning resolution.
