PDF file cannot be read by adobe on another platform

Asked by Meghan-nicholas

The pdf file created by simple scan can be read by adobe pdf reader 9 (version 9) on my ubuntu 10.10 laptop, no problem.

I am using dropbox to share my pdf files.

If I then try to open this file (downloaded via dropbox) on my android mobile phone (using adobe reader) I receive an error 'the document cannot be opened because it is corrupted or damaged'.

When I scan using gscan2pdf all pdfs can be read no problem on my android so I know that this is not a problem with dropbox.

Could this be that there is a pdf library that needs updating?

Thanks, Meghan

This could be a bug in simple-scan or in a library it uses. It could also be a bug in the PDF viewing software on your Android-based phone. It could also be simple file corruption (that doesn't happen so often though, for relatively small files like most PDF's).

If you rescan the document to create a new PDF file (please keep the old PDF file), is the resulting document readable on your Android-based phone? Are you able to open the (original) PDF document with evince (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Evince) on your Ubuntu system?

I have rescanned the document and it still cannot be read on my Android
phone (via drop box) using Adobe pdf reader.
Both files can be read by evince on ubuntu.
I also tried copying the pdf directly onto my phone and got the same error,
so this rules out drop box as a problem.
Hope that helps.

Do you have, or are you willing to install, Adobe Acrobat Reader on your Ubuntu system (or on a Windows system), to test with that?

If you don't have Adobe Acrobat Reader on your Ubuntu system (or on a Windows system) and you're unwilling to install it, then please scan a non-confidential document, verify that you're able to open it with evince but not with Adobe Reader on your Android device, and then post it somewhere on the web so I can test it with Adobe Acrobat Reader in both Ubuntu and Windows.

If you need instructions for any of this, please post and indicate what you need help with.

Hi Eliah,
I have Adobe Reader 9 installed on my Ubuntu system.
I have noticed that when I open a PDF created by simple scan that a message
pops up that the file is damaged, then the file opens correctly. However,
this only happened once and from then on it was ok.

This file opens in both adobe and evince, but not by android adobe reader:

FYI I have a Canon Pixma MP640 printer/scanner communicating with my laptop
over wifi.

Like you, I am able to open the file without any problems or special messages, in evince.

I am able to open the file in Adobe Reader 9 (the Linux version, on Ubuntu) as well, but I am presented with a message: "The file is damaged but is being repaired." I presume this is the message you saw too. However, this message appears for me *every* time I open the file in Adobe Reader 9, not just the first time. The specific version of Adobe Reader 9 that I am using (from Help > About Adobe Reader 9...) is 9.3.3 and the build date is 6/16/2010. Are you sure the message only appears the first time, for you?

It seems unlikely that Adobe Reader 9 (as opposed to the full, for-pay version of Adobe Acrobat) would actually save the repairs to the file. That's certainly not happening for me. But if, somehow, that's happening for you, then perhaps after you've opened the file in Adobe Reader 9 on Ubuntu, you can send the file to your Android device and open it successfully.

If that's not effective as a workaround, then you should be able to use the following steps as a workaround for this problem:

(1) Open the file in evince.

(2) Click File > Print... (which opens up the Print window).

(3) In the Print window, in the General tab, there is a list of printers. It contains at least "Print to File" (plus whatever printers you have installed on your Ubuntu system). Click "Print to File". Below the list of printers is "Output format". Make sure "PDF" is selected. Click Print.

That should produce a PDF file that opens normally (I have tried this and it worked...though I don't have an Android device to test it on). However, this is not a particularly good long-term solution, because the produced file will be larger than the original PDF file, possibly lower in quality, and likely harder to edit with PDF editing tools (such as the for-pay version of Adobe Acrobat).

This does strongly appear to reflect a bug in simple-scan, and I would encourage you to report it as one. If you wish to do this, then it is important that you first read https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs. You should search to see if this bug has already been reported (that page explains how to do this), before reporting it. When you report the bug, you should use the "ubuntu-bug" utility to do so, and preferably invoke it using the process ID of simple-scan immediately after scanning a document. When you file the report, make sure to describe the problem in detail, and attach the document (the one you will just have scanned) to the bug report. (Questions on Launchpad don't support attachments, but bugs do.) Make sure that document produces the same behavior as this document (it could even be a rescan of the same physical page, if you like.)

The title of your bug report could be something like "simple-scan creates broken PDF's" (feel free to use that title if you don't come up with a better one). And I recommend including the specific version information (specific version and build date) for your installed copy of Adobe Reader 9 in the bug report, as that application is, the terms of reproducibility, the application presenting the primary evidence that the document produced by simple-scan is corrupted. It's probably a good idea to include the information about your scanner device, too.

After you've reported your bug, you should link your bug and this question to each other by using the "Link existing bug" link at the top of this question. However, your bug report should be complete and self-contained; it should not be necessary for the Ubuntu developers to refer to this question, in order to fully understand and appreciate your bug report.

Correction: The most reasonable time to invoke "ubuntu-bug" with simple-scan's PID is immediately after *saving* the document (producing a broken PDF file), not just after scanning. Also, I had meant to say that you should feel free to ask for additional help with this if needed, but that the page I linked you to (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs) explains what this means.

I was incorrect in saying that the error message appears only once when
opening the pdf file. It actually happens every time as does for you. I was
actually getting confused with evince because that is my default viewer not
adobe, which opens the pdf files correctly.
The version of ubuntu adobe reader I have installed is 9.4.2 2/11/2011.
I am going to report this as a bug now.
Thanks for your help.

Thanks for submitting a bug report.

Did the workaround I suggested help, for the time being?

It might be .pdf file corruption
In that case I would advise to use tool below

I think the PDF format has a serious flaw in that they become corrupted VERY EASILY. It seems Adobe is unwilling to fix or even acknowledge the problem.

We scan hard copies of our client's originally signed paperwork with a Fujitsu high speed scanner. We often find that a pdf, one that appeared to be OK when it was scanned, after a very short time (within the same day) is all of a sudden corrupted. I've talked to Adobe and it seems they just dismiss this and keep telling me, restore from the original pdf. What I scanned IS the original pdf! The scanning of hard copy docs to a pdf that can so easily be corrupted does not give me great confidence in the pdf as a viable doc, particularly if that pdf is what we are relying on to replace our hard copies (and especially if those hard copies have been shredded).
