Epson SX510W configuration

I was able to install the printer of the SX510W rather easily,even the WiFi stuff, but getting the scanner to work is another thing.
I installed first the recommended driver packages from AVASYS Corp., but "scanimage -L" went nuts, as before, reporting bus overflow. sane-find-scanner tool detects the device, though, as does lsusb.
So what's the trick?
