Simple Scan crashes after a few seconds of scanning

I've installed Simple Scan 2.32.0 on my Ubuntu 10.10. It automatically recognized my HP ScanJet 4200C. However, whenever I scan with 300 dpi the application crashes after only a few pixels have been scanned.

With 150 dpi it works - however, there are lots of horizontal lines across the images created. So the image is practically useless.

Is that a software or a hardware issue?

Could you run simple-scan from terminal (as I'm not on my Ubuntu computer, I can't provide you exact file name) and report errors from this terminal.

try downloading a new hplip file from hp's site.
