There seems to be an old thread ( http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=650674 ) at Ubuntu Forums detailing the experiences someone had with that scanner on Ubuntu, but that thread is from a few years ago. The thread links to a driver site at http://avasys.jp/eng/linux_driver/ which appears to have a driver and scanner application for the scanner. Unfortunately I don't have such a scanner at hand so I can't test this myself and can't vouch for the driver.

Thank you. I have downloaded the driver file and burnt it to disk, but
how do I install it?

First of all, which file did you download? For me the download page actually seems to list quite a bunch of files in different formats.

The ones you'll need are the *deb* packages for iscan-data, iscan and iscan-plugin-gt-x770. If you're using a 32-bit version of Ubuntu, pick the 32-bit versions of the files, and 64-bit versions if you're using 64-bit Ubuntu. Since I'm using a 32-bit version, the files I'd pick are:

iscan-data_1.3.0-2_all.deb
iscan_2.26.0-3_i386.deb
iscan-plugin-gt-x770_2.1.1-2_i386.deb

There's also a link to an install manual at the bottom of the download page. Try following the instructions in the manual; I can't do much better than the manual since I don't even have a similar scanner available.

You'll have to install the deb packages in the order in which I listed them above -- the data package first, then iscan, and finally the plugin (which apparently contains the actual driver for the V500). You should be able to install each deb package by double-clicking on it. If all goes well, that might be all you need to do. Afterwards, you should be able to scan either with the Image Scan utility installed by the iscan package or through Simple Scan, if I understood the documentation correctly. It might be that some advanced settings and functionality is only available through the Image Scan application supplied with the driver.

If you have trouble following the instructions in the manual or run into other problems, let me know and I can try to get you through.

Thank you. I downloaded the three files and then double clicked each in
the order you suggested. iscan-data loaded ok but iscan and iscan-plugin
reported:- ERROR: dependency not satisfiable etc. ?????

Okay, apparently you'll also need the iscan_2.26.0-3.ltdl7_i386.deb file
from the same download page. You'll need to install that before
proceeding to iscan and iscan-plugin.

I was wondering what that file was for but since the install manual
didn't mention it, I thought maybe it wasn't necessary. Sorry about the
confusion.

Actually, let me correct that for you a little bit: you need to install iscan_2.26.0-3.ltdl7_i386.deb *instead* of iscan_2.26.0-3_i386.deb, not in addition to it. The two are alternative versions, and you need the ltdl7 version for recent Ubuntu releases. After you've installed iscan_2.26.0-3.ltdl7_i386.deb, try installing the plugin and it should install okay.
