canon mp490 printer scanner prints not recognised for scan

I'm running Lucid 10.04 this works fine on jaunty but not on this version of ubuntu.

I had problem with "simple-scan", and went back to "xsane".

Canon scanner are a bit hit and miss. There seems to be a guide here:
