Simple Scan failed to scan: Error communicating with scanner

Simple Scan continually fails when attempting to scan multiple pages. I have a Brother MFC-5460CN with an automatic document feeder, which works well in xsane. Simple Scan will scan and preview the first page, however, it appears that the program chokes when previewing the second page. I believe this can be fixed by either slowing down the scanner's feeding speed, or by speeding up, delaying, or altogether eliminating the preview window.
