Tags/Event names by subdirectory name on import

Asked by Aaron Whitehouse

Shotwell looks really good and I like the automatic "event" idea.

At the moment, we have all our photos on a server, sorted very well by subdirectory/subfolder names. At first look, it seems like we are going to have to go through again and merge/rename events to get it to be anywhere near as useful as our current folders.

Is there any way that we can get Shotwell to import the subfolder names as tags or event names or something, so that we can use those to help us transition?

Aaron,

you're one of a number of Shotwell users who've told us that they have existing photo libraries with a useful folder hierarchy, and would like that hierarchy to be preserved somehow in Shotwell. Unfortunately Shotwell does not support that at this time: there's no way to convert folders to events or tags as you suggested.

Our development plan for Shotwell is that we'd like to add several new trees to the sidebar over time; the user will be able to enable or disable these as they like. One of those trees will be a folder tree, which will let you browse photos in your library according to their layout on disk. That feature idea is tracked here:

Once that's implemented I hope that will be useful for you. That's probably a couple of releases away, however.

Can you help with this problem?
