Invalid password, therefore cannot download updates.

Asked by Eric Brown

Recently installed version 12.04 and my password is not recognised( user account shows 5 characters only, which wasn't my choice). Therefore, I am not able to do any administration, including the download of recent security updates. Also, I am getting a message window with problem report which I can't send for the same reason. This question was asked already on the community board, but I cannot get into recovery mode in the initial boot. Ubuntu is my only operating system. Should I try to re-install
Ubuntu via download, again?

You can certainly do a fresh install but make sure everything is backed up first. If you tell it to use the whole drive it will replace everything.

If you are going to update use 12.04.1 available here

http://releases.ubuntu.com/12.04/

Before you do that however it should be possible to reset your password

There are a few methods (mostly similar) take a look at these

http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/resetpassword

https://help.ubuntu.com/12.04/ubuntu-help/user-forgottenpassword.html

Can you help with this problem?
