Ctrl+Alt+F2 (also F1 to F6) login user password problem

Asked by michael on 2012-08-09

When I use Ctrl+Alt+F2 (also F1 to F6) I am asked to Login and Password. I put the correct Username and password in, the response is incorrect Login. I was made aware of problem at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/software-center/+question/205107, so others have same problem. I have Ubuntu 12.04, 11.04, 10.04, and 10.10(EOL). All four respond the same, incorrect login. Have tried "ls /home", "id",and "whoami" to confirm Username. I know the password is correct. Does anyone know how to make this work. I have tried many times on all four releases, so I am sure the correct Login and Password were used.

Solved, the number pad does not work when Ctrl+Alt+F1 thru F6 are used. Using numbers at top of keyboard will work.

I do not know. I would like some information from you. Do you have any shift+key? Like T H > & | ! " A, or any combination in your password? Also I am having display problems, when I use Ctrl+Alt+F7 (the way to get out of the console). Have blocks of different sizes, that are black or distorted. Must reboot to fix. I may reopen this question.
