Password reset

Asked by gabrielle beaupre

I have no password for my User Account on Ubunut One 12.04 LTS. I've tried to reboot and hold down SHIFT in order to change it, but that doesn't work. What do I do now? I need the password to authenticate downloads. Help!

You must be talking about the root or super user password. You need to reset the password in recovery mode. The below links are very good at describing the problem so I wont confuse the issue here. However, there is a difference between the user account password and the root password. It's a good idea to get an understanding of this difference as the root user can cause allot of damage if not used with some restraint.

Try this link first.

http://askubuntu.com/questions/24006/how-do-i-reset-a-lost-administrative-root-password

or this one,

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LostPassword

or possibly this one,

http://www.faqforge.com/linux/reset-root-password-ubuntu-linux-without-cd/

If it doesn't work or you cannot follow it please just ask and I'll help you out. Note the timing of holding down shift is important. You need to make sure the machine has progressed through the BIOS start cycle.

Hope this helps

Regards,

Jason.
