I am having problems logging onto my computer as the administrator. I do not know the password and it gives you no recovery of password options.

Asked by Candice

I need to log onto my computer as the administrator because I got this computer used and don't know the main password. I can't change any major settings due to this problem. I also cant' install software without knowledge of this password, and I am a student so I do need to install more software. What can I do since the main login screen offers no suggestions on how to recover or change an existing password?

When you start your computer, hold F8.
The GRUB (OS selection) prompt should come.
Select Ubuntu, XXX, (recovery mode) or something like that.
After it boots, select root shell.
type 'passwd <username>' (replace <username> with the your username)
It should ask for the new password twice.
Once you are done, press the power button which will shutdown the computer.

Can you help with this problem?
