boot select recovery boot at the grub prompt, and select root

at the prompt type in passwd <usernname>

and you'll be prompted to enter a new username

however take note that if you are running an encrypted partition, this will not give access to that data, and nothing short of a brute force attack can do that..... which could take.... a significant amount of... time

oops when I sad p[prompted for a new username I meant password
