keep getting "authentication failure" when put in password to open with user name.

when i turn on my pc computer i'm asked to enter my password. i do but keep getting "authentication failure". i didn't use the pc for a while...could this have created this problem? or maybe i forgot my password? i'm sure that i'm using the right password though. thanks 4 ur help. drew bennett

Turn your computer on.
Press ESC at the grub prompt.
Press e for edit.
Highlight the line that begins kernel ………, press e
Go to the very end of the line, add rw init=/bin/bash
press enter, then press b to boot your system.
Your system will boot up to a passwordless root shell.
Type in passwd username
Set your password.
Type in reboot

I forgot to mention: you have lost your password, it didn't change by itself, did it? :)
