password wont unlock when i turn on my computer

Asked by Dolores Croom

i am usint unbuntu 10:10, when i turned off my computer one day there wasnt a password on my computer. my kids messed with it and now when i turn it on there is a ppropmt asking me to enter in my user name as well as password. ive tried several passwords and usernames but none are recognized. i also tried to disable the unbuntu program but have been unsuccessful because i have no access to my internet due to the password block being on my computer. is there a way i can bypass this password prompt or disable the program without having internet access? please help i havent been able to access the internet in weeks and am too cheap to hire someone to fix this issue especially if i am capable of doing it myself

I suggest you make your kids a separate account which is not in the admin group then change your password. This will help control the OS.

As Andrew said, set the kids up with there own account. In Addition to this, set your system to require password at logon, and set the screensaver to lock the computer if it's idle for 10 minutes.

It's a bit hard to know how they changed anything so easily on your computer as it would have required the password, unless they already knew it, or it was something very simple to guess.
