lost admin password for 10.10

Asked by Roger S Stuart on 2011-09-29

am in a divorce and I got the computors but left the papers with the passwords.
Remembered most of the important ones except the admin password for Umbuntu 10.10. How do I reset the admin pass word and admin name? Am fairly new to this only 5 years. Do not know too much yet but am learning. Oh BTW I am 66 years old.

There is no single 'admin password' in Ubuntu. ANY user in the admin group can use sudo and run administrative tasks. If your OS has only one local user then this may seem like the admin user, but it's not, it is just a user. The admin user is 'root' and the account is disabled by default. You can easily reset your user account password using this guide:

http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/resetpassword

However, if you have another user whom is also in the admin group then you can reset the password as him/her with:

sudo passwd foo

obviously change the username for the username you forgot the password for. Eg:

sudo passwd andy

Can you help with this problem?
