Need user id and password

Asked by Angie Litwin

I have my brothers computer who passed away 2 years ago. I can't sign on because Ubuntu asks for a user id and password.

Hi please do this:
1. When booting up press SHIFT (in systems 9.10 "karmic" or later) or ESC (in systems 9.04 "jaunty" or earlier) at the grub prompt and use the arrow keys to select the rescue mode option and press enter.

2. When the system has load, enter this command and press enter:
ls /home

this will show you the user of the computer.

3. Now insert this command(ATTENTION: you have to change <username> with the username that you have see with the 2nd step):
passwd <username>

Press return, then you will be prompted to enter and confirm a new password.

4. Once you are done resetting your password you can than switch back to the normal GUI mode by putting this in:
init 2

Can you help with this problem?
