i don't remeber my password unable to download and install daily updates

I am unable to download and install daily updates for the "lynx" version of "Ubuntu" because I am unable to remember what my password is. In order to try and locate my password I have tried pressing the "shift" key when booting up but I am unable to get initially to the boot menu. I am considering installing the next version of "Ubuntu" but because I cannot get these updates for my current version of "Ubuntu" I cannot upgrade. Can anyone help me?
