What if you do not know the username? and what if the "ls /home" doesn't work? I am using ubuntu 11.04.... I baught a laptop which only has ubuntu installed on it. I do not know the username or password. And i have never used ubuntu before. I went onto preferences to try and activate the cube (effect which changes between 4 windows) and somehow I did something which made the launcher and bar at the top disappear. and now i can't fix that via terminal because terminal asks for security login detail which is username and password. two things i do not know... Please help

"What if you do not know the username?"

That's what "ls /home" is for. It shows you the usernames of accounts on your machine.

"and what if the "ls /home" doesn't work?"

It depends *how* it doesn't work. Is this a hypothetical question, or did you actually try it and have it not work? If you tried it and it did not work, please describe what *did* happen. What text was shown in the Terminal when you ran "ls /home"?

Can you help with this problem?
