how to createadminor su user acct if i have forgot pass word

i want to upgrade fromubuntu9.10 to10.4.or i want to get security updates for 9.10 the system asks for administrators password.either this accouant is not created or i have lost password. so i am unable to make
any changes.

Reboot and hold shift (or press ESC for grub legacy). Select recovery mode then select root. You can now run:

passwd foo

replace foo with your username. E.g:

passwd andy

Then reboot with:

reboot

Log in as your user and you can now authenticate sudo etc with the new password. You should reset the password of the account which is in the admin group.
