I don't have password to download software

Asked by Kerry Doyle

I need to download an update to my Adobe but I'm being asked for an administrative password. I don't have it. Is there any way to find out what it is? I don't have any of the paperwork from the computer.

If you try to download via Software Center, Synaptic or Terminal, the requested passwd usually is the one you've set up on installation, the one you login with.

I don't use a password to log in, that's the problem so I don't remember it, is there anyway to find out what it is if I have lost it?

Boot into recovery mode, drop to 'root shell', be sure about your username and give it a new passwd.

Discovering it would be extremely difficult. But resetting it to something else (of your choosing) is reasonably easy:

(Sorry, I didn't see Sam_'s post; the instructions in my post are pretty equivalent to Sam_'s.)

Can you help with this problem?
