Logging into Ubuntu for the first time

Asked by Allen K

I just installed Ubuntu on my laptop and when my computer boots up in Ubuntu a user name appears which I did not create, it appears to use my Windows 7 user name. I am confused because I never created a user name or password. When I type the same password used in Windows it is not accepted. The other option to log on does not work either. I looked forward to using Ubuntu but I cannot get past the log on screen. Any help will be very much appreciated.

I beg to differ with you Greg but I was not given any of those options. I had three options one was to try Ubuntu (I had installed it on my USB device) or to install it along with Windows 7 and or to do a full install. I selected to run it with Windows 7 which would allow me to boot up from either OS. At that point Ubuntu just began the installation process. It then asked me to restart my computer to complete the installation process. When it restarted there were the two options either to boot up in Ubuntu or Win7. When I selected Ubuntu the screen popped up with my Win7 user name and or underneath that was the word other. The only option for me was to type in my password. I had assumed since it somehow pulled in the same user name I had in Win7 the password was the same but this was not the case at all. That is when I posted my question here. To reiterate I was never prompted to complete the time location, user name password or the HDD space to be used.

Allen,
Please reset your ubuntu user(same name as imported from Windows7) password using the directions above.

Best Regards,
Will

Greg is referring to step #7 in https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GraphicalInstall which is similar on the latest versions of Ubuntu.
