I need a walkthrough on changing root password

Asked by Jeanette R Dayton

I just got a used computer with Ubuntu 7.0 (gutsy). Am very new to Linux. I need root password to add me as admin so I can download software and do basic maintenence (not as root). Also messed with how firefox handles certain files. And now getting this message "Firefox does not know how to handle this address, because the protocol (javascript) isn't associated with any program" And the drop-down menus on certain pages do not read right. Thank You.

Now, for firefox, you can move your current firefox profile out of the way with by launching nautilus (the file manager), selecting "view->show hidden files", then in your home folder, rename the folder ".mozilla" to something like ".mozilla-backup".

This should reset your firefox profile to the defaults. Javascript being disabled can cause some sites to layout in a wierd manner, and "interactive" components of pages to not function

Hi there! Welcome to the world of Linux! To add yourself as an admin, you'll need to use the "sudo" command in the terminal. For example, if you want to install new software, you can open the terminal and type "sudo apt-get install [software name]" and then enter your user password. As for Firefox, it sounds like there might be an issue with the file associations. You could try resetting Firefox to its default settings by going to "Help" > "Troubleshooting Information" > "Refresh Firefox". This should fix the issue with the drop-down menus as well. Good luck!
