There is already the source for version 8.16.1-2ubuntu2 in jammy-proposed, but it failed building (probably related to the openssl v3 transition), see https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/sendmail

I guess that the developers are already working on a solution for the problem.

Additionally you have to be aware that Ubuntu is copying packages from Debian (to avoid double packaging work) and also Debian does not have version 8.17.1 yet, see https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/sendmail

8.17.1 is now in kinetic, but not in jammy, although there is some security fix made. Is there a reason for not uploading 8.17.1 in jammy?

Apparently the problems with building sendmail 8.16.* for jammy could not be solved before publication date of jammy.
Please see FAQ #3037: “no rolling release” for possibilities to request an upgrade for the version in jammy.
Apart from that anybody can create a PPA with such version (and its required dependencies), or you can try compiling from source yourself.

Can you help with this problem?
