I followed all the instructions faithfully. My laptop showed that the seamonkey1.1.12 is being downloaded and installed, but when I tried to run it, it was the old versions 1.1.9. Pl. help.

Hi,

Try using the Ubuntuzilla script to update seamonkey:

http://ubuntuzilla.wiki.sourceforge.net/

Mark

Hello

wget -c http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/seamonkey/releases/1.1.12/seamonkey-1.1.12.en-US.linux-i686.installer.tar.gz

tar zxvf seamonkey-1.1.12.en-US.linux-i686.installer.tar.gz

cd seamonkey-installer
gksudo ./seamonkey-installer

(Just click all the buttons in the resulting GUI)

and its installed

Further customization:

sudo mv /usr/local/seamonkey/plugins /usr/local/seamonkey/plugins.bak
sudo ln -s /usr/lib/firefox/plugins /usr/local/seamonkey/plugins
sudo ln -s /usr/local/seamonkey/seamonkey /usr/bin/seamonkey

and you are done...

Regards

I have followed your instructions. However, the result is that even after installation, when I run seamonkey, it shows that it is version 1.1.9 and 1.1.12.

Why not uninstall the Ubuntu seamonkey package first?

sudo apt-get remove --purge seamonkey

then you can install the downloaded version.

I have tried all the solutions offered by you, but the problem remains. I am able to download and install seamonkey1.1.12, but when I run it, it shows 1.1.9 version.

Make sure you've removed all Ubuntu packages.

sudo apt-get remove seamonkey seamonkey-browser seamonkey-chatzilla seamonkey-dom-inspector seamonkey-gnome-support seamonkey-mailnews

(The above is all on one line, it may wrap when viewed in the browser).

After this, if you type the "seamonkey" command in a terminal, you should get an error message that seamonkey isn't installed, if you don't then you've missed something.

Then you can install seamonkey from the mozilla site.

So what happens when you open a terminal and type "seamonkey"?

I must also ask - as a self-confessed novice why do you feel the need to have this latest version of seamonkey rather than the Ubuntu package version?

When I type seamonkey in the terminal, nothing happens. Though I am a novice, I believe in using the latest softwares. I am from India. For the last three months, I am propagating Ubuntu. I have encouraged others to adopt Ubuntu. I am glad to inform you that many people have taken to Ubuntu, after I informed them about it. I feel Ubuntu is a good choice as it free. It provides all the features. However, I wish to add that it requires improvements here and there. I feel that the updates should provide the latest versions of the softwares.

Regarding upgrading to Seamonkey1.1.12, I would say that I removed the old version 1.1.9. Then I installed the latest version as instructed by Mr Bhavani Shankar. I was able to install it. But it did not appear any where on my machine.
