locked out '10.4'

i am locked out of certain things because i chose to 'generate password' on the root account. but i didnt take note and now cant use synaptic. what do i do?

when grub loads, hold shift. You can then select root (scroll down using cursor)

you can now run:

passwd foo

replace foo with your usual username

You can now set your password then reboot with:

shutdown -r now

You should now be able to logon ok and use synaptic using gksudo etc.
