Drivers for CanoScan D646U - Ubuntu 8.04

Just installed Ubuntu 8.04 and Xsane cant find my Scanner.
Are the Drivers for CanoScan D646U available?

I also have a Canon scanner which will not work in Linux because (unlike HP and others) Canon does not provide drivers nor will it make any code available for development. Currently I have the scanner working in Ubuntu via XP using virtualisation software. Naturally I will change brands at my next scanner purchase.
