I can't connect to HP MFP 1120 using Simple Scan.

Asked by Richard Hamilton

I've downloaded linux platform sofware to run an HP multifunction printer (HP Laserjet M1120 MFP) on Ubuntu 10.04. I've got no problem printing, but when I try to scan (using 'Simple Scan'), I get an error message telling me "Unable to connect to scanner". It looks like it should be straightforward but I can't see how to connect - can anyone help?

Please open a terminal (Applications > Accessories > Terminal) and type the following:

sane-find-scanner

This command is the behind-the-scenes program to detect scanners. Please copy the output of the program to this page.

richard@heatherdene:~$ sane-find-scanner

  # sane-find-scanner will now attempt to detect your scanner. If the
  # result is different from what you expected, first make sure your
  # scanner is powered up and properly connected to your computer.

  # No SCSI scanners found. If you expected something different, make sure that
  # you have loaded a kernel SCSI driver for your SCSI adapter.

found USB scanner (vendor=0x03f0, product=0x5617) at libusb:001:003
  # Your USB scanner was (probably) detected. It may or may not be supported by
  # SANE. Try scanimage -L and read the backend's manpage.

  # Not checking for parallel port scanners.

  # Most Scanners connected to the parallel port or other proprietary ports
  # can't be detected by this program.

  # You may want to run this program as root to find all devices. Once you
  # found the scanner devices, be sure to adjust access permissions as
  # necessary.

Please try entering "scanimage -L" into the terminal just like the output of the sane-find-scanner instructed. That is a testing command to test your scanner and report any scanning errors.
