CanoScan 8800F wont work with Ubuntu where do I get correct drivers for this scanner

Asked by Neil

I have Ubuntu Karmic and I am trying to get a Canon CanoScan 8800F scanner to work. The Sane or Xsane software available from the Ubuntu software centre doesn't support my scanner, can any one point me to a software source /repositry ? has anybody had success getting the 8800F model to work? This is the last hurdle I need to overcome before ditching Win XP. Note I have attempted to use Wine to load the original Canon software with no success, perhaps I am missing something in the setup. Please Help

If you check https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupportComponentsScannersCanon I think you'll find that your scanner is not supported by Canon--for Linux (Ubuntu) drivers at this time. Make sure that it doesn't actually work from Applications | Graphics | Simple Scan instead of trying to use Sane or Xsane.

As much as you like your scanner in the Windows environment, you'll probably have to pick a different model to use with Ubuntu. I've had good success with HP Photosmart printer/scanners. My HP Photosmart C6280 works with Applications | Graphics | Simple Scan just fine.

Hi David, Thanks for your reply I went to Application / Graphics and found the scanner utility when I open this and click scan the utility just closes? I hate to dump perfectly working gear it looks as if I will have to keep a second PC loaded with good old XP if I want to use the Canon scanner (I use it to backup slides and film etc)
Thanks for your help

If it's any consolation for you I had a perfectly good Canoscan 70 that worked immediately with Windows and went mindless with Ubuntu. I gave it away and now use my HP Photosmart C6280. (When you're 71, you've got to go with what works--tomorrow may not come!)

David, makes sense most gear has a 3 year life anyway so I will just consider the CanoScan as ready for the recycle bin and look at Ubuntu friendly equipment.
Thanks for your comments.
Best regards
Neil

There IS a solution for this scanner. I posted on ubuntuforums.org here's the link:

Scroll down to post #9 on that ubuntuforums.org thread. I posted that solution after getting mine to work. It's a compilation of steps I found out about by googling extensively.

If you copy & paste the steps apparently the hyphen I used in step 4 gets turned into a longer hyphen or doubled or something so you might have to adjust or remove the hyphens altogether. If you read some of the posts following mine you'll see what I mean.

Hello Shutter4U
I followed the solution you mentioned in your previous comment and as Obama said

YES I CAN SCAN

Note ! As mentioned you need to watch out for the hyphens in step 4 so I just typed the command in from the keyboard rather than cut and paste followed the rest of the steps and it all works!

I have used the basic scanner utility and Xsane Image Scanner and apart from a crash when I tried to scan at 4800 DPI (I think the file size was going to end up 300 meg or so) it works like a dream.

Many thanks for this solution.

How do I get this answer to show as 'problem solved' rather than just adding a further comment?
