Canon LIDE scanner does not start with Xsane, Simple-scan or scan2pdf

Asked by Satyapriyananda

I have a Canon LIDe 110 Flatbed scanner. It does not start in Xsane, Simple Scan or pdf2scan after installing Ubuntu 16.04. How to make it start? It just makes a little sound and the window either closes or ends up with an error message. I have tried all the suggestions given in the internet regarding sane backends, reinstalling xsane, simple scan. Iinstalled scan2pdf and that also fails. Please help.

Running a different application won't do anything if the driver isn't present. It's like trying VLC, Windows Media Player and Winamp in Windows and not getting sound but then you look in device manager and the sound card has no driver installed.

This is a common mistake amongst new users.

  # sane-find-scanner will now attempt to detect your scanner. If the
  # result is different from what you expected, first make sure your
  # scanner is powered up and properly connected to your computer.

  # No SCSI scanners found. If you expected something different, make sure that
  # you have loaded a kernel SCSI driver for your SCSI adapter.

found USB scanner (vendor=0x04a9 [Canon], product=0x1909 [CanoScan], chip=GL124) at libusb:001:007
  # Your USB scanner was (probably) detected. It may or may not be supported by
  # SANE. Try scanimage -L and read the backend's manpage.

  # Not checking for parallel port scanners.

  # Most Scanners connected to the parallel port or other proprietary ports
  # can't be detected by this program.

Did you try:

sudo xsane

If this works, then it's a simple permissions issue.

sudo xsane gives the following warning:

You try to run XSane as ROOT, that really is DANGEROUS!
Do not send any bug reports when you have any problems while running XSane as root: YOU ARE ALONE!
Continue at your own risk Cancel

If I choose to continue, then xsane opens without the first window. The second window where the image settings are entered and the third window where 8 or 16 bit can be selected alone remain.

When I press SCAN button, the windows become dim (as if there is shortage of memory). After quite some time the scanning commences and the output file is full of vertical streaks.

First, many thanks for all the trouble you took. It finally turned out that dust had accumulated over a long period of not using the scanner. The whirring sound was because the holder housing the tubelight was stuck at the far end. A little patting and the holder began to slide smoothly. I took a few scans and satisfied myself that it was only a mechanical problem! Thanks once again.
