winbind4-- where is winbindd?

Asked by Jeff Powell

I'm attempting to install winbind4 so I cam make my Ubuntu Server 11.10 box a domain controller. But the winbind4 package does not contain winbindd, nor does it contain a login script. I'm probably doing something really stupid, but even Ubuntu's official package listing does not seem to include winbindd. Is there some other package I have to install to actually use winbind4?

Yes, I already know about those packages. My question is, where is winbindd? It's not included in the winbind4 package. If you click on the link above, then click "list of files" next to either i386 or amd64, you can see that /usr/bin/winbindd is not included. I can't believe more people haven't brought this up-- the winbind4 package doesn't actually contain winbindd. The only executables is includes is nsstest, wbinfo, and ntlm_auth.

Jeff,

Keeping in mind that I'm an average user like yourself......

According to the Samba team, Samba4 has its own built-in implementation of winbind. There isn't a stand-alone winbind daemon.

I believe all the windbind4 package does is provide the libnss_winbind library and a few binaries for winbind querying and maintenance.

If you build Samba4 from scratch, that lib is supposed to be included in the bundle. Why is is separated in the Ubuntu (Debian?) packages is beyond me.

Anyway, when I installed winbind4, wbinfo -p told me that the winbind service was running. Unfortunately, it caused Samba to panic however, essentially rendering it useless. I still haven't figured out what's causing this.

It is like you're on the right track, but it might help to check if you're looking at the correct package repository for your Ubuntu version. Sometimes the necessary components are included in a different package. Have you tried installing samba as well? It often includes winbindd and related files https://apkskeeda.com/.

It seems like you might be missing the winbindd service in your setup. You might want to check if the Winbind package is properly installed and configured. I found some great troubleshooting tips on similar issues on https://koalageddon.com/. Has anyone else run into this problem?

To use winbindd for your Ubuntu Server 11.10, you may need to install the samba or samba4 package, as winbindd is typically included within them. Double-check dependencies and ensure all related components are installed. For domain controller functionality, consider using samba-tool to configure your setup correctly.

It is like you’re hitting a package issue. In newer versions of Ubuntu, winbindd has been included in the samba package instead of winbind4. You might want to try installing samba and samba-common to get the necessary components for domain controller functionality https://coffeepodh.com/diy-coffee-pod-holder-ideas/.

Winbindd is usually part of the main Samba package rather than winbind4. You might need to install samba or samba-common-bin to get it. Running apt-cache search winbind can also help find the right package https://carsxstreetapk.com/.

It looks like I'm missing something with the winbind4 installation. The winbindd and login script aren't included, and I can't seem to find them in the package listing. Is there another package I need to install to get everything working for the domain controller setup? Appreciate any guidance! For more visit : https://cashfaster.com.au/

It looks like you might be missing a key component for winbind functionality. In Ubuntu 11.10, you might need to install samba-common or winbind in addition to winbind4. You could also try checking if the samba package has the necessary dependencies for domain control. Hope this helps! Thanks for sharing for more visit : https://thearmyjobs.com/

It looks like you might need to install the winbind package separately in addition to winbind4. Sometimes, winbindd isn't included in the newer versions by default. You can try installing samba and winbind together, which should provide all the necessary components. Let me know if that works! For more visit : https://reload.pk/

I ran into the same issue on an older Ubuntu version—super confusing at first. Winbindd usually comes with the main samba package, not winbind4. Try installing samba or samba4 and see if that pulls in what you need. Also, consider upgrading Ubuntu if possible—11.10 is pretty outdated. for more visit : https://wednesdayaddamscostume.shop/

You're not doing anything wrong—this is just spicier than http://puredesifoods.com/!

The winbind4 package doesn't include winbindd. Instead, install it via:

bash
Copy
Edit
sudo apt-get install samba winbind libnss-winbind libpam-winbind
Also, Ubuntu 11.10 is really old—consider upgrading for a smoother, more secure setup. Like desi foods, fresher is better!

Interesting thread! I ran into something similar when working on a setup and found it was easier to switch to the regular winbind package instead of winbind4 — it actually includes winbindd and works better for domain controller configs.
By the way, totally unrelated but if anyone’s also updating home setups, I recently found some nice window treatment ideas here: https://dbswindowtreatments.com/ — really clean, modern options! 😅
