Network problems Ubuntu and Windows

Asked by Gary

I have a windows LAN with machines running various version of windows OS Vista, XP
and win2000 all have shared folders and disks all is well in MS Land.

Enter the machine ruining the Ubuntu 8.04 OS I click (>) PLACES > NETWORK I see a
icon WINDOWS NETWORK >> I see WORKGROUP >> The spinning dial appears for a
second then nothing! Not one file, disk or machine. I have done some poking around
the system and the help files but have fail to find the answer.

I know the machine ruining the Ubuntu works with my network because the the web
browser works fine and I have been transfering files by emailing them to myself.
Not a acceptable answer to the problem but it gets me by for the moment.

I hope the fix is relatively simple but after reading some of other users troubles with
networks I gather there is no such thing as an easy fix.

in nautilus's addres bar type:

smb://windowshostname/sharename

e.g.

smb://2kserver/music

or whatever

Does that work?

I believe you need to install Winbind to be able to see the Windows machines. Oh, and change the workgroup/domain name in /etc/samba/smb.conf so it matches the actual workgroup name.

Thank you for the suggestions I have yet to complete them.
Being unfamiliar with Ubuntu I have hit a couple of snags.

The Nautilus what and were is that i have not found it yet
I'm sure its right in frount of me but I don't know what I'm
looking for.

I have found the tool that installs packages like Winbind and
had it make the installation. But Ubuntu will not allow me to
save the edited smb.conf file despite being logged on as
administrator.

Also the workgroup/domain name in the smb.conf file is
already named WORKGROUP all caps is the name case
sensitive? Mine is named the generic Workgroup.

Thanks

I suggest you run:

sudo apt-get install samba

It adds a lot of good stuff
