Asked by ginner159

hello again....

in in need of some help with my home file server.

when i boot up i can access my samba shares and see my server on the network (using vista home pre 32bit) but after a period of time of inactivity on the servr it seems to just dissapear!

by that i mean even if files are transfering over if the mouse isnt moved or a key pressed after a certain time its gone this really dont help me when im using ssh either casue even that cant find it.

if its any help i have a dnydns account and the router that im currently behind is a netgear WNR 2000

im wanting to put ftp on to it but id rather sort this out first.

thanks again for every1s help. ive appreciated every bit of it since ive started learning the linux language :D ;D

When they disappear launch a terminal and run:

dmesg | tail

Instead of ftp, you can use ssh and use scp to transfer or even mount it with sshfs in fstab. ftp is not encrypted so isnt secure. samba is unsecured too so neither is really advisable to be used over the internet (LAN is fine)

you could also setup a ping to the server and do what you do. When the server disapears, look to see if the ping start to fail.

I also have this exact problem. I have samba running on my Ubuntu 9.04 machine. My wife has a Windows Vista Machine. I can get Samba File sharing to work perfectly. Then i can walk away for a few minutes or an hour or so, and when i pull up the Vista Network Center, my Ubuntu machine is gone. I can refresh it and it still doesn't come back. I can restart both machines, and restart my smbd in Ubuntu, and sometimes that works to make my ubuntu machine visible when browsing my shared folders in Vista.

I have tried pinging, and i can use the command line from Vista and successfully ping my ubuntu machine, but under the network center, my ubuntu machine is NOT visible. As mentioned, i can tinker with it and restart things and refresh things and usually (not always) get it back working and file sharing, but it always disappears after a few minutes. I have been working and googling a solution for about 3 weeks now and have not come up with anything.

Any suggestions? Thanks a lot.

Steve
