Transferring documents and files

Asked by Alexa H.

I've recently put Ubuntu on my desktop, which originally ran on Windows XP. How do I get my music, pictures, and other documents to Ubuntu so I can wipe XP off the computer completely? I also need to do the same for my notebook, which runs on Vista.

Yes you can, there is a few ways to do this.
1. you can transfer the files across to a usb stick. Then install ubuntu on the whole drive then move the files from the usb to ubuntu.
2. install ubuntu on the free space on your drive then move the files to your ubuntu system and then use gparted to format the microsoft partitions.
3. Dual boot windows and ubuntu https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBoot this will make it easy to go back to windows if you dont like ubuntu.

Hope this helps
Shane

Most of us keep a working Windows as part of a dual-boot even though we may rarely ever go back into Windows. Sometimes a game or something works a bit better. It's easy enough to resize a Windows partition to be barely large enough for it although i tend to use it as data storage quite often, on smaller drives. Reinstalling Windows is a nightmare so uninstalling it is worth avoiding. imo

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Ubuntu can easily read data stored on a Windows 'drive'. Just go up to the "Places" menu and click on each of the "media" until you find the one with your Windows stuff on it ;)
